She was Queen Regent for both Kamehameha II and III. 👉Your educational lei niho palaoa will be similar to this. 👉Your "Royal Cotton" just arrived. 100% cotton for pure and healing mana. 👉Pre-requisite -You will receive your research report handouts on 03/21. Responses are due 03/28 since your research was assigned in January. Only those who submit their handout receive their supplies to get started on your braiding at home in preparation for workshops on APRIL 18. Late submission of handout results in later start of workshop prep to be done at home 👉Braiding - you will be gently braiding a total of approx. 40 yds so plan accordingly. ——Why ka’u vs. ko’u?—— Ma ka ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i, we show “possession” of our partners (wives, husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends) children/grandchildren, and pets using A-class possessive pronouns: Hawaiian kūpuna recognized that our partners, keiki, and beloved furry friends are beings we have CHOSEN to have in our lives and we do NOT “own” them and they CAN change (separation or divorce as with partners OR children can be hānai’d by another family member) Conversely, our parents, siblings, grandparents, etc. from which we come from or share direct parentage with us use O-class possessive pronouns (ko’u ’ohana, ko’u tūtū, ko’u ’anakē, for example). This is because, per ‘Ike kūpuna, we CANNOT change the biological connections with the folks who came before us, these people are permanent features of who we are. OF COURSE, ma ka ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i, we also have the endearing possessive pronoun, KU’U, which can be used in place of ka’u or ko’u, but it’s important to have even a small understanding of the distinction between A-class and O-class possessive pronouns as we see and hear them often in our oli, hula, and weekly questions!

🌺 VIDEO SUBMISSIONS DUE 10/25 As noted in August, all video submission dates were posted.  Since majority did not meet this date, evening solo testing and rehearsal has been scheduled tomorrow as noted in rehearsal schedule.  I am watching all videos and as I said in class a couple months ago, they help me identify what to review in class, which I have been doing.  Kumu Lei considers my comments as private lessons so I am no longer putting written comments for everyone especially if not submitted on time.  In addition, line ups have been based on your videos. My previous efforts were to TEACH you how to evaluate yourselves.

NEW ROSETTE SHELL LEI LEI PO'O - start by removing 4 at each end.  medium size lei po'o princess style, slightly angles. you should see full shell lei when looking forward. when vertical hands are touching ears, fingers should touch lei po'o. LEI Ā'Ī - keep current length for now.  when you wear purple dress bottom of shell lei should match bottom of ruffle. LEI KUPE'E - yes make 4 of them 👉Please bring excess shell rosettes to dress rehearsal.

REMINDER FROM MJ: Aloha kakou, Please kokua, NEXT Saturday 11/1/25 will be the last opportunity to write in Kumu Lei journal as part of her birthday gift. Please pule about what olelo no’eau you wish to share. This should be one you have learned in halau. As a reminder you will be writing your olelo no’eau in the journal inself along with the scripture you medidated on during our homework. You will then write your name on the bottom, english, hawaiian (if you have one). You should have been given a practice sheet to help you space everything. The journal has your name on a sticky to guide you to your page. There is a ruler to help you with your lines if you need it. The books pages are really thin, so please only use the pens that are with the book and we don’t want the ink to bleed through. Also please be sure your page is dry before closing the book. I will be there next week right next to the journal and available to help during all breaks. There is a lot of us so please be persistent. This is a beautiful way to show Kumu Lei our aloha for her and her legacy of keeping hula a spiritual discipline as well as an act of cultural preservation. Let’s make sure our mana is poni and full of aloha with every line. People read devotions often when they need to hear from Ke Akua, how beautiful that we get to share what we have heard and hope it can bless our Kumu as it has us. Ps keiki you will be drawing a picture under the olelo, parent or adult can help you write it out if you can’t write yet.
